Blackhawks fire assistant coach Mike Kitchen

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman promised change after the first-round playoff sweep at the hands of the Predators, and the first part of that change came Monday as the Hawks fired assistant coach Mike Kitchen.

Kitchen joined the team in July of 2010 and was a part of two Stanley Cup runs in 2013 and 2015. He was in charge of the Hawks' penalty kill, which began the season as the worst in the league but finished 24th. Kitchen also oversaw the Hawks' defensemen.

"We believe this decision is best for our organization moving forward," Bowman said.

"Mike had an impact on two different Stanley Cup championship teams during his tenure in Chicago. We appreciate his many contributions and wish he and his family success in the future."
